Slow London

Salve for the soul, Slow London is an inspirational lifestyle guide for Londoners who want to live more and fret less. It celebrates all that's unique, local, natural, traditional and sensory in this great city.

So rise up - in your own time, of course - against the culture of speed and uniformity. Tune into the seasons, buy greens from a farmer, savour a proper pint, meet local artisans, knit on the Tube, listen for bumblebees, forage for fungi, cycle the backstreets, paint the town, seek out silence, recalibrate your clock and do, for goodness sake, slow down and smell the roses.

Robin Barton and Hayley Cull

Mark Chilvers (photographer)

Robin Barton is a London-based journalist who contributes to several newspapers and magazines, including the Independent on Sunday and the Evening Standard. He lives south of the river but roams far and wide on his bike looking for things to write about, which may include food, sport, travel, architecture or even foraging for mushrooms on Hampstead Heath.

Hayley Cull helped devise the Slow Guides series with her contribution to the original title, Melbourne. This southern bird migrated north soon after, and has been looking at London through a slow lens ever since. When she's not flitting about the city she writes a bit, gets distracted a lot and spends far too much time in bookshops. She co-wrote and edited this book from under her favourite apple tree in south London, an idyllic little spot that's probably to blame for the wistful wittering within.

Mark Chilvers specialises in portrait, travel and feature photography, and has been extensively published in more magazines and newspapers than is worth mentioning. He is also involved in community teaching programmes in south London as well as completing his Masters in documentary and photojournalism.
